چکیده

The lake and bog deposits of Cedar Creek Forest, Isanti and Anoka counties, Minnesota, consist of a multiple-facies accumulation of marl, peat, copropel, and sapropel. Chromatographic analyses of the lipoid extracts of samples of the sediments show measurable amounts of saturated and aromatic hydrocarbons as well as large proportions of asphalts and polar lipoid compounds. In general composition the "oily" fractions somewhat resemble a Venezuelan asphalt. The ratio of total lipoids in the peat, marl, and underlying sand, respectively, in this deposit is approximately 12:3:1. The highest measured content of saturated hydrocarbons occurs just above the marl. The other fractions show no noteworthy relationship to depth or type of material. Most of the variation in distribution of the lipoids appears primary, but some shifting of the hydrocarbons may have resulted from movements of ground water within the bog. The data suggest that the hydrocarbon formation or liberation from the source material took place concomitantly with the accumulation of the lake and bog deposits.

Ecological Networks in Fisheries: Predicting the Future?

76 The theme for the 142nd annual meeting of the American Fisheries Society (AFS) was “Fisheries Networks: Building Ecological, Social, and Professional Relationships,” and that provided me a hook to reflect on how studies of ecological networks have developed and how they can be used to inform fisheries research. Ecological networks, as we know them, date back to the pioneering studies of Raym...

Annotated Checklist of Amphibians and Reptiles Reported from Cedar Bog, Ohio

Thirty-one species of amphibians and reptiles have been reliably reported from Cedar Bog, Ohio including: 5 salamanders, 11 frogs and toads, 5 turtles, 1 lizard and 9 snakes, or approximately 40% of the total number of species reported for the state. Four of these species are classified as potentially threatened, endangered or of special interest in Ohio. Environmental changes due to dredging o...

Spatial Heterogeneity, Not Visitation Bias, Dominates Variation in Herbivory: Comment

Making scientific measurements can alter the subject of the measurement (Heisenberg 1927), limiting one’s ability to understand how systems operate when they are not being studied. The idea that such effects occur during ecological research is not new (e.g., Singer and Wedlake 1981, Major 1990, Duncan et al. 2002), but our recent studies have renewed awareness (Cahill et al. 2001, 2002, Hik et ...

Spatial relationships between plant litter, gopher disturbance and vegetation at different stages of oldfield succession

Fine-scale spatial patterns of small mammal disturbances and local accumulation of plant litter were studied together with the spatial pattern of vegetation in different stages of old-field succession at Cedar Creek Natural History Area, Minnesota, USA. Seven stands from one to 66 years old were sampled. Presence of living plant species, local soil disturbances by pocket gophers (Geomys bursari...

Distribution pattern of Ahwaz sandstone and Kalhur evaporite members of Asmari Formation in Dezful Embayment and Abadan plain, a basis for stratigraphic traps studies

Ahwas sandstone and Kalhur evaporate members are two main constituents of the best reservoir unit of Zagros region, i.e. Asmari Formation. Poorly cemented to loose nature of the sandstone member and it’s well textural maturity provide highly porous and permeable zones, whereas highly compacted nature of the evaporate member provide impermeable zones in the reservoir. This paper aims to study th...
